About North Fork Falls
The three waterfalls located in the Kentucky Falls Natural Area are some of the most spectacular waterfalls found in Oregon’s Coast Range. North Fork Falls is by far the largest and most impressive of these falls, located along the North Fork Smith River right next to Lower Kentucky Falls. Unlike Lower Kentucky Fall’s direct drop over a cliff, North Fork Falls begins its 125-foot journey down two streams at 90-degree angles from one another after being split around a small rock promontory. When the river-right stream falls into a narrow crevice, it quickly corrects its course. From that point on, both channels of the falls spray water in parallel to the rocky riverbed below. When flow is high, the river swells so much that – like Upper Kentucky Falls further up the trail – the two segments of this fall get swallowed up. All that remains is a single broad veil of water thundering into the basin.

“The waterfall at North Fork are a beauty anyone visiting in Oregon should see. Although North Fork does not offer any swimming opportunities, the view from both sides of the canyon make for some spectacular photographs. The trail leading up to the falls is narrow but easy to navigate, and the overlooks along the way are a great place to take in the beauty of the surrounding area. Kentucky Falls Natural Area is definitely one of Oregon’s must-see waterfalls, and North Fork should be at the top of your list! Visiting North Fork can be a great way to spend an afternoon exploring Oregon’s natural beauty. The falls are easily accessible and there is plenty of parking available in the nearby lot. Be sure to dress appropriately for the conditions and wear proper footwear, as the terrain can be tricky to navigate. As with any outdoor activity, always be prepared for inclement weather and bring plenty of snacks and water in order to stay hydrated.
